Day 1 in Uganda

As I type this I am sitting on the porch of an orphan home looking up at the stars here in Uganda. It’s so beautiful and full of life here. Even today a pack of monkeys crossed the street while we were driving!

Anyways I’m loving it here. We haven’t officially done much because we’ve been traveling but it’s been legit. We had two 10 hour flights to get here and we then stayed in a guest house last night in the capital city. We woke up this am and took a 6 hour car ride to get to where we are now. It’s an orphanage called Restoration Gateway. It’s ran by this sweet couple from Texas and they have almost 150 kids in the orphanage! The kids live in brick houses that they build on site. Each house has a ‘mom’ that stays there full time to cook and help the kids with homework.

Today the kids were practicing a bunch of performances because the first lady of Uganda is coming Monday. Seriously there is nothing more beautiful than a group of 150 kids singing praise songs to Jesus with dancing mingled in. Such a special moment to partake in.

I’m out here with my buddy who runs an awesome ministry called Dollar For The Poor. If you have a chance check it out. They only ask for a monthly donation of one dollar a month and that money helps to give water, education, and micro finance to orphanages like the one we’re at! It’s crazy to think I’ve been giving for about 2 years and so only about 24 bucks but it’s cool to come see one of the places that it comes to fruition at! It’s a sweet feeling to see the kids faces who you are helping get an education and then microloan so they can live with sustainability. And to think how much a dollar to us is and how much that can do in places like Uganda is unbelievable! It’s humbling for sure. Anyways that’s it for now. Hope to post photos and video soon.

We are praying for you as you partake in your trip to Uganda. Please keep a group from Heritage Church out of Moultrie Ga as they leave in the morning on their journey to do missions in Uganda also. My little sister is in this group and we are praying for God to do amazing works for you all!! May God bless you!!

Oh my gosh! Reading this makes me miss Uganda so much! I’ve been there twice, and want to go back so much.. I was in Mityana. It’s about a 3 hour drive from Kampala, you’re so right, seeing a group of kids worship God is amazing to see. I had the pleasure of seeing 400 students (200 who lived at the orphanage) sing and dance day after day! I can’t wait to read about the rest of your trip! God has so much in store for you while you’re in their great nation. Just know once you go, a little piece of you will stay there and you’re always going to want to go back. Get to know the people; their stories will change your view on life. I was only 14 the first time i went, and they changed me!
    Have a great trip!!!

    Love Uganda!

Was there in 2009 with my wife and spent time working with orphanages and AIDS patients, along with churches. What part of Uganda are you in? We worked with Watoto, The Comforter’s Center, and Windows of Hope.

    Hi Jeff!

We have church members working as missionaries right now in Gula. They are the Rieger Family from Castle Rock, WA. Our church is The Bridge, here in Longview, WA. Hope you get a chance to meet this wonderful family! They haven’t been there long and I’m sure they would be very blessed by your presence, if it works out for you to visit with them.

I will be praying for you and your friend during your travels.

    In Christ,
    Jeanette Fagerness

Wow! That sounds amazing! I’ve been wanting to go to Uganda for 3 years now. I have a friend there. He provides care for an orphanage there called Uganda Children’s Concern. I will absolutely stand with you in prayer! The children there are such a blessing! I will also check out the Dollar For The Poor. Thank you for sharing this. I will be looking forward to your post and photos. God bless!

Hey Jeff…will definitely be keeping you and your team covered with my prayers. I’ll be doing outreach at the orphanage in Guguletu in Cape Town which the church I fellowship at supports this coming Saturday…so looking forward to spending time with those kids and just loving on them Jesus-style.
    God bless you brother :)
